Artist's Description
This image is a pencil drawing in graphite called “Varanasi Woman.” Fine controlled graphite creates smooth tone and elegant soft textures.
When I traveled in India I fell in love with the alleyways and small streets of Varanasi. This elderly woman came by to greet us and her whole family showed up. She squatted and watched all of us trying to communicate Hindi to English. Her granddaughter was a little shy and stood back from the rest of this friendly family.
About Karla Beatty
My name is Karla Beatty. I am a painter and an illustrator for books, magazines, and the internet. My work covers a wide range of topics: landscapes, portraits, gardens, botanicals, travel, urban sketching, and more. Most of my work is in oils, acrylics, watercolors, graphite, carbon dust, and digital images. Much of my art is connected to travel adventures and experiences. A good portion of my paintings are created on location or plein air. Some of my work is from photographs where I paint, draw, sculpt, and spend way more hours than I intend to on the computer making digital art. All images ©2000-2015 Karla Beatty. All rights reserved. Thank you! It's the combination of values and soft edges that give that sense of perspective.
